Hybrid Power Comes of Age at Sea

Hybrid propulsion has been promised to yacht owners for about fifteen years, usually as a concept render. What changed recently is that it stopped being a concept: Azimut and Volvo Penta put a hybrid driveline behind IPS pods and put it into series production on the Seadeck 7 — the first yacht to combine the two — a package that took a Boat Builder Award in 2024.
Four ways to move
The system is interesting less for its peak numbers than for how many different boats it lets one hull be.
- Pure Electric. Zero-emission running at up to eleven knots — enough to leave an anchorage, cross a bay or come into a marina in near silence.
- Hybrid Standard. The driveline hands over from electric to diesel as speed and demand rise.
- Hybrid Boost. The electric motors add to the diesels for sharper acceleration.
- Cross-over. A further mode announced by the yard to follow.
Alongside those there is Hotel Mode: up to twelve hours running the boat’s systems at anchor with no generator and no emissions. Anyone who has spent a night in a quiet cove listening to their own genset cycle will understand immediately why that is the headline feature, not the top speed.
There is also joystick docking in electric mode, which is a small thing that turns out to matter: manoeuvring into a tight berth without the diesels running changes the character of arriving somewhere.

Lighter, therefore cleaner
The efficiency gain is not only the driveline. Azimut uses up to 40 % carbon in the hull, deck and superstructure of the Seadeck, and combines it with a new hull form. Taken together — hybrid package, carbon construction, hull design — the yard quotes a reduction in CO₂ emissions of up to 40 % against a comparable traditional planing, shaft-driven yacht of similar size.
That is the honest version of the story: the hybrid system is one third of the answer. Weight you never build is the rest of it.

What it changes at anchor
On this coast the value lands squarely at anchor. A night at the Rosario Islands or in Guna Yala with air conditioning, refrigeration and lighting running for twelve hours — and no generator cycling on and off — is a different experience of the same place. It is also, quietly, a better neighbour in an anchorage where every other boat can hear you.
