The Art of Selection: Buying a Certified Pre-Owned Azimut Yacht

The Art of Selection: Buying a Certified Pre-Owned Azimut Yacht

The strongest argument for a pre-owned Azimut is unglamorous: the steepest part of the depreciation curve has already happened, and someone else paid for it. The second strongest is that on a well-kept boat you can see how everything has aged — which is something no new-build brochure can offer you.

What separates a good pre-owned purchase from an expensive one is not instinct. It is evidence.

Why Azimut ages well

Azimut has been building series production yachts long enough that a fifteen-year-old hull is still a supported product. Parts are available, the yard’s documentation is thorough, and the Azimut|Benetti Group — the largest private group in the sector — is still very much behind it. That matters more than it sounds: an orphaned brand turns every repair into a fabrication project.

It also means the technical story is legible. You can trace how a model was built, what changed between production years, and which options were fitted — the same engineering discipline we look at in craftsmanship in detail.

The evidence to ask for

Before an offer, before a survey, before anyone gets on a plane — ask for the paperwork. If it does not exist, that is itself the answer.

  • Engine and generator hours, read off the displays rather than quoted from memory, plus the service history against those hours.
  • Oil analysis on main engines and generator. It is inexpensive and it detects wear that a sea trial will not.
  • Complete service records with dates, hours, yard names and invoices — not a summary sheet written for the sale.
  • Running gear history. Volvo Penta IPS and MAN or MTU shaft lines have very different service profiles and very different costs when neglected.
  • Stabiliser service records if fitted, and hours on the hydraulics.
  • Air conditioning, watermaker and generator — the three systems that quietly define whether the boat is usable in this climate.
  • Electronics age. A ten-year-old plotter is not a fault, but it is a budget line.
  • Canvas, upholstery and teak. On a boat that has lived in the tropics, these tell you honestly how it was covered and how it was washed.

Survey and sea trial

Commission an accredited marine surveyor of your own choosing — not one suggested by the seller — and pay for the boat to come out of the water. The out-of-water inspection is where moisture readings, blistering, keel and running-gear alignment, seacocks and through-hulls actually get looked at.

On the sea trial, insist on a full-power run held long enough for temperatures to stabilise, then low-speed manoeuvring and docking. Most of the problems that matter show up either at wide-open throttle or at idle in a crosswind, and almost never in between.

Paperwork across two countries

Buying across a border adds a layer that has nothing to do with the boat. Flag and registration, import duties and taxes, and the transfer itself work differently in Colombia and Panama, and the sequence matters — getting it out of order can be expensive. Berth availability is worth confirming early too: on a large yacht, the hardest thing to find is not the yacht.

This is the part of a private sale that most often goes wrong, and the part we handle with our partners as a matter of course.

Our Certified Pre-Owned Collection

We keep a small, deliberately selective pre-owned list — boats we know, with histories we can show you. It currently includes an Azimut Fly 62 (2021) and an Azimut Grande 30M (2020).

Both are the kind of boat this article is about: recent enough to be current, old enough that the first owner absorbed the depreciation, and documented well enough that a survey confirms what we have already told you.
